Smartphones increasingly replacing e-ticket in Riga public transport
Passengers of Riga public transport who purchase full-fare tickets are increasingly choosing digital solutions, buying tickets on their smartphones instead of using the e-ticket. This trend is confirmed by 2025 data on ticket purchasing habits. Approximately half of these passengers now purchase their tickets online via smartphone, saving time and enhancing convenience.
Smartphone usage is particularly pronounced in the 90-minute ticket segment. In 2025, 68% of passengers who purchased a full-fare 90-minute ticket did so via smartphone, while 32% chose the e-ticket.
A steady shift toward digital solutions is also evident in the purchase of monthly tickets among passengers paying the standard €30 monthly fare. In 2025, 61% of passengers purchased their monthly ticket using the e-ticket, while 39% opted for a smartphone. By comparison, in 2024 the ratio was 72% e-talon and 28% smartphone.
These changes have also led to a nearly twofold reduction in the use of the yellow e-ticket, contributing to more sustainable resource use and reduced paper consumption.
Ticket purchase and validation via smartphone takes place in a fully digital environment. The Rīgas satiksme mobile app provides passengers with convenient access to ticket purchasing and registration, up-to-date timetables, and real-time vehicle tracking in one place, making journey planning simple and transparent.
Rīgas satiksme reminds passengers that both 90-minute tickets and monthly tickets must be registered immediately after boarding a vehicle and each time when transferring to another public transport vehicle.
